Melissa Carroll teaches music to both Lower and Upper School students. She is a native Oregonian born and raised in Salem. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Pacific University and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from Portland State University. Prior to teaching at Park Academy, Melissa lived in Singapore and Chengdu, China where she worked as a freelance musician and teacher. Melissa is a jazz fanatic and regularly performs with her bands in Portland. Currently, she is the Music Director of NOPO Big Band and performs regularly with The Flat Nines, a jazz-funk ensemble, and the Groove, a cover band.
At Park Academy, Melissa takes her passion for playing instruments and transforms her classroom into a hands-on learning experience. Students learn teamwork through group activities as well as technical knowledge of music and their instrument. Students learn songs and musical games, as well as instruments: ukulele, guitar, drums bass, and piano. Melissa also loves to teach music history to give students a historical context of the music they learn to play.
