Ignite. Empower. Imagine.
Melissa Carroll teaches music to both Lower and Upper School students. She is a native Oregonian born and raised in Salem. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Pacific University and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from Portland State University. Prior to teaching at Park Academy, Melissa lived in Singapore and Chengdu, China where she worked as a freelance musician and teacher. Melissa is a jazz fanatic and regularly performs with bands in Portland. Currently, she performs regularly with her band, The Flat Nines, a jazz-funk ensemble, and is the Assistant Director for Rose City Swing, a big band operated by the nonprofit organization Rose City Pride Bands. She also teaches private lessons on woodwind instruments, such as the flute, clarinet, saxophone and oboe.
At Park Academy, Melissa takes her passion for playing instruments and transforms her classroom into a hands-on learning experience. Students learn teamwork through group activities as well as technical knowledge of music and their instrument. Through a Kodaly-Inspired methodology, students learn songs and musical games, as well as instruments: ukulele, guitar, drums bass, and piano. The music program also partners with the Youth Music Project for regular field trips and more experiential learning.
