Melissa Carroll teaches music to grades 3-8. She is a native Oregonian born and raised in Salem. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Pacific University and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from Portland State University. Prior to teaching at Park Academy, Melissa lived in Singapore and Chengdu, China where she worked as a freelance musician and teacher. Melissa is a jazz-funk fanatic and regularly performs with bands in Portland.
At Park Academy, Melissa takes her passion for playing instruments and transforms her classroom into a hands-on learning experience. In elementary school, students learn teamwork through group activities as well as technical knowledge of music and instruments. Through a Kodaly-Inspired methodology, students learn songs and musical games, as well as instruments: hand drums, xylophones, ukulele, guitar, drums, bass, and piano. In middle school students can explore the world of rock music through performance-based classes. Melissa also teaches podcasting classes where students learn the basics of production software.
