Melissa Carroll teaches music to both Lower and Upper School students. She is a native Oregonian born and raised in Salem. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Pacific University and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from Portland State University. Prior to teaching at Park Academy, Melissa lived in Singapore and Chengdu, China where she worked as a freelance musician and teacher. Melissa is a jazz fanatic and regularly performs with bands in Portland. Currently, she performs regularly with her band, The Flat Nines, a jazz-funk ensemble, and is the Assistant Director for Rose City Swing, a big band operated by the nonprofit organization Rose City Pride Bands.
At Park Academy, Melissa takes her passion for playing instruments and transforms her classroom into a hands-on learning experience. In elementary school, students learn teamwork through group activities as well as technical knowledge of music and instruments. Through a Kodaly-Inspired methodology, students learn songs and musical games, as well as instruments: ukulele, guitar, drums, bass, and piano. In middle and high school students can explore the world of rock music through performance-based classes. Music production and podcasting classes offer students a way to express themselves and learn the basics of production software.
