Supporting the Transition to High School

In early Fall 2022, Park Academy announced the phasing out of its high school. Check out how we support our 8th grade students’ transition to High School.

High School Sketches

At the beginning of the year, our school counselor, Mrs. Shuford coordinates meetings with each 8th grade family to discuss their student’s strengths, the types of support they will need in high school, and what kind of school they are looking for. One of our goals has been to keep Park Academy students and families well-informed about their academic options for high school. Mrs. Shuford has researched private and public high schools in the area to assess their suitability for Park Academy students, particularly in terms of educational opportunities, inclusivity, and access to Student Support Services. Mrs. Shuford helps families as they compare and contrast the high school options that best fits their student.

High School Preview Series

Mrs. Shuford puts together an annual High School Preview, a four-part series including three in-person visits from high school representatives to share information about their programs and answer parent questions.  Megan Holcomb, our Literacy and Curriculum Coordinator, also presents on the IEP process for students planning to attend their home or another local public high school.

Supporting the IEP Process

As Park Academy 8th graders transition to high school, many parents consider going back to a public school setting. Public high schools can be an excellent option for many Park Academy students who have gained the skills and confidence to self-advocate and feel successful in a wider environment. While not all students who leave Park Academy will need them, many will qualify for either an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a 504 Accommodation Plan. At Park Academy, we have established a close relationship with the Lake Oswego School District to help families through the process in as smooth a manner as possible.
