Muaz Hijazin

Teacher

Muaz Hijazin is a newcomer to both Park Academy and Portland.  He is enjoying this new adventure, teaching science and helping students discover the scientist within themselves. He is proud to join a community that values learning differences and focuses on helping every student recognize their unique gifts and talents.

Dr. Muaz brings to his classroom both passion and extensive experience in research and education, particularly in veterinary medicine, food science, and microbiology. After transitioning to teaching in secondary education, he taught science to middle and high school students, working with diverse learners, including students with learning differences and other learning needs. He has also supported English Language Learners and Newcomers in these schools. Creating a supportive learning environment and building strong, trusting relationships with his students are at the core of his teaching philosophy.

At Park Academy, Dr. Muaz hopes to inspire curiosity and engagement through hands-on labs and project-based learning. He enjoys connecting classroom science to real-world experiences so students can better understand and truly appreciate the role science plays in everyday life.

Outside of school, Dr. Muaz enjoys gardening, walking, and cooking for his family. He is a parent of three wonderful children, two in high school and one in second grade. He and his family live in Washougal.  He will often stop on his drive home to capture photos of the sunset and the stunning view of Mt. Hood.

Dr. Muaz has always loved animals, and the tortoise is one of his favorites. Tortoises are slow, observant creatures that notice every detail. They are gentle, peaceful reptiles that come in many sizes, with some species living for more than 200 years! When he was around his students’ age, he had several tortoises in his backyard. He loved feeding them and caring for their babies. It remains one of his favorite childhood memories.
